Saint-Émilion’s Château Fonroque was purchased by the celebrated Moueix family in
1931. In 1979 the property joined several other Right Bank wineries managed by Éts
Jean-Pierre Moueix, and in 2001 Alain Moueix took charge and began implementing
numerous changes. He experimented with biodynamic farming techniques on select
parcels, and by 2005, Fonroque had become completely biodynamic, earning the right
to state their organic certification on the labels.
The 20 hectare vineyard is planted in
88% Merlot and 12% Cabernet Franc and lies on clay, limestone and sand. The
Fonroque style tends to be a robust, rich and tannic. In good vintages, it benefits from
at least 2-3 years cellaring prior to consumption.
